I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Seeker” by first time author Rhiannon Johanna. Ms Johanna is a young 20-something Australian woman who, from the evidence of this book, is a writer to keep your eyes on. Seeker is full of trenchant insights into 21st century life that are at times acerbic, sad, hilarious, ecstatic, subtle and infused with quiet pathos.As I read the brilliant shards of insight in "Seeker", I had this strange feeling that the great 17th Century French aphorist, La Rochefoucauld, had been reincarnated as a beautiful 22-year-old woman to provide a female counterpoint to the Frenchman’s mordant observations. Anyone familiar with his work will appreciate the irony of that thought.Johanna's poems—I almost hate to call them that because her writing is the opposite of "precious”—are written in a sparkling, electrically charged style that deftly plays with contrasts in ways that form the perfect framework for her insights. What she does that I find uniquely satisfying is to find some way to leave almost every page on a hopeful note, without compromising her realistic take on life’s tragedies, large and small. Her subject—in her words—is the voids, gaps and mirrors in our lives created by the constant uncertainty of human life.As someone who loves words, what I want to convey most of all is the sheer joy I felt reading Seeker. I find Johanna’s deceptively simple style a pellucid, colourful and pleasurable way to experience her explorations of the way people act and react to a world of guesswork and uncertainty. It’s exciting to discover such a young talent at the beginning of her career. I expect to see her name on the screenwriting credits of many future films and TV series. Now that I think of it, her style reminds me of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the screenwriter and lead in the acclaimed British TV series Fleabag.But this book. I think you will carry it everywhere at least for awhile. You’ll pull it out to read in coffee shops, airports or on trains heading in to work. It’s rare that I start reading a book simply can’t put it down. Happened with Seeker. Thanks, Rhiannon, for the ride.

This was a delight to read. She is very talented. The poems are succinct and seem to be filled with truth. I very much enjoyed the story within. I’m not sure if that was purposeful but it felt like the pages were meant to be turned. The poems that I had to reread (multiple times over) were on pg 12, 27, 50, 51, and 55.
